How to Behave

Tips on cultural norms and respectful behavior

Politeness and Greetings

Taiwanese are generally polite and modest; a slight nod or '你好' when entering shops is appreciated. Remove shoes if invited into a private home.

Temple Conduct

Be respectful at temples—speak softly, avoid pointing, and follow any photography restrictions. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites.

Handling Food

Use both hands when offering or receiving items like business cards or gifts; communal dishes are common, so use serving utensils when provided.

Indigenous Communities

When visiting indigenous villages or cultural performances, be respectful: ask before photographing people in traditional dress and follow local guidance.

Safety Guide

Safety

Yuchi is generally safe with low violent crime; standard precautions apply (watch belongings in crowded tourist spots). Mountain and water activities carry natural hazards—check weather forecasts, avoid hiking in heavy rain, wear helmets when biking on steeper sections, and use life jackets for boating. Insect repellent is advisable in warmer months and sunscreen year-round.

Payment Methods

Cash (NTD) is widely used—carry small bills for markets and buses. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels, restaurants and many shops, but smaller stalls and rural vendors may be cash-only. Mobile payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay) and local e-wallets are growing but not universal.

Best Time to Visit

And what to expect in different seasons...

Spring

March–May brings mild temperatures, blossoming tea gardens and fewer crowds than summer; occasional rain and mist create atmospheric photos.

Summer

June–August is warm and humid with afternoon showers and typhoon risk; lake activities are lively but expect more tourists and higher humidity.

Autumn

September–November is one of the best times to visit — cooler, clearer skies and comfortable hiking conditions; late autumn can be windy at higher viewpoints.

Winter

December–February is cool and crisp (rarely freezing); mornings can be foggy, which makes for dramatic scenery, and accommodation prices may be lower except Chinese New Year weeks.

Nightlife Guide
